The Six Million Dollar Man 1.06

Doomsday, and Counting

Colonel Vasily Zuchov, an old friend of Steve is visiting the United States when he gets word that there has been an earthquake near Kamkov Island. He rushes to get back there. Steve goes with him.

Vasily and Steve learn, once they get to Kamkov Island, that Irina, Vasily’s fiancée and a computer expert, is trapped in the tunnels beneath the base. The two men, despite being given express orders not to attempt to rescue Irina, grab some gear and head underground.

Vasily and Steve find Irina. She is unconscious when they find her but she recovers and tells them about the failsafe device on the island that will destroy the entire base in a nuclear blast in less than an hour.

Steve, Vasily, and Irina start to make their way down through the tunnels in the hopes of finding the computer that controls the failsafe device and preventing it from exploding. Oscar shows up at the base just as the general in charge is about to evacuate everyone left above ground. Oscar decides to stick around despite the imminent danger. The general elects to stay too.

Steve and Irina make it to the computer room but Vasily is killed by one of the defense systems just before they get there. Steve and Irina try to stop the failsafe device through conventional means but when that doesn’t work Steve resorts to other methods.

Thoughts

The actors playing Russians made little to no attempt to speak English with Russian accent.

This was not a good episode. The plot was weak and the performances by the guest stars weren't much better. There were no special effects sounds when Steve used his super powers. The episode just didn't excite, amuse, or move me.

Notes

Gary Collins played the part of Vasily. This is his only appearance in an episode of this show. He appeared in one episode of The Bionic Woman.

Jane Merrow played the part of Irina. This is the first of three episodes of this show in which she appeared. The other two episodes were a two-part story from the fourth season. She plays Irina once again in those episodes. She also appeared in one episode of The Prisoner, which I have seen but it has been about 20 years since I last watched it.

William Smithers played the part of the general in charge of the base. This is the only episode of this show in which he appeared. He also appeared in an episode of Star Trek (1966) and two of The Invaders, the first of which was 1.10 The Innocent.
