Strange Energies
Mariner goes on an away mission led by Jack Ransom. She tries to clean up the planet on which they have landed and winds up unleashing strange energies that give Ransom god-like powers. He unleashes his new powers on the Cerritos because he is sick of playing second fiddle to Mariner who has been on really good terms with Captain Freeman ever since 1.10 No Small Parts ended.
Tendi fears that Rutherford has changed and won't want to be her friend anymore. She attempts to cure him of synthetic memory degradation (SMD) while he is on a date with Ensign Barnes.
Boimler shows up briefly in this episode at the beginning and at the end. In the beginning it is a holographic image of him created by Mariner. At the end of the episode it is the real Boimler on the Titan, serving under Captain Will Riker.
There were references in this episode to an episode of Star Trek (1966), 1.03 Where No Man Has Gone Before. Gary Mitchell, a friend of Kirk's, was endowed with god-like powers in that episode.
I want to like this episode more than I do. I got a few laughs out of it but it felt too much like fan service, too derivative, and not original enough. Also, that episode with Gary Mitchell is one that I wasn't crazy about.
