The Unquiet Dead
The Doctor and Rose land in Cardiff in 1869, although the Doctor thinks at first that they have landed in Naples in 1860. There are ghost like creatures possessing dead human bodies. Charles Dickens is in town. The Doctor and Rose meet Dickens and the ghosts.
The Doctor tries to help the ghosts. They are victims of the Time War, or so they say. They also claim to just want to attain physical form again. The rift that connects their world to the Earth is found in the morgue of that belongs to an undertaker's business. Gwyneth, the undertaker's assistant turns out to be the key to letting them through the rift and also to destroying the rift.
This is another one of those episodes where the villain is a monster / evil alien. There is lip service paid toward humanizing the ghost like creatures but in the end they turn out to be unrepentantly evil. Not my cup of tea. Also, I'm not sure how the Doctor can tell that the big explosion killed the aliens and destroyed the rift through which the aliens passed.
Notes
Simon Callow played the part of Charles Dickens. I have seen him in several movies but it has been close to three decades since I last saw one of those movies. This isn't the first or the most recent time that he has played Charles Dickens.
Eve Myles played the part of Gwyneth. This is the first of three appearances she made on this show but she played a different character in her other two appearances. She was also part of the regular cast of Torchwood, playing that same other character.
Alan David played the part of Sneed, the undertaker. This is the only episode of Doctor Who in which he has appeared. He appeared in one episode of The Twilight Zone (1985).
