Kraft Suspense Theatre 1.26

The Watchman

starring Jack Warden, Victoria Shaw, Telly Savalas
directed by Sydney Pollack

Reporter Jack Fleming (Jack Warden) receives a summons from Ramon Castillo (Telly Savalas), a former leader of rebel forces in Spain, a man he has known for over 25 years. Jack reflects on his past encounters with Castillo as he talks to his psychiatrist, before and after going to see Ramon. Jack was in love with Helena (Victoria Shaw), Ramon's woman. He was always afraid of expressing or acting on those feelings. He finally does when he goes to see Ramon in Spain and it gets Helena and Ramon killed by Ramon's righthand man.

Thoughts

I've seen Jack Warden in plenty of other things. The most recent thing I saw him in was an episode of The Twilight Zone, 1.07 The Lonely. I've seen Telly Savalas in plenty of other things. The most recent thing I saw him in was On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). The only other thing in which I've seen Victoria Shaw recently was The Crimson Kimono (1959).

The description of this episode on Wikipedia reads, "An American secret agent is hot on the trail of a vanished scientist and a vital secret formula." I don't know where that description comes from but it does not resemble the episode of television I watched in the least bit. The description on IMDb is accurate.

I hoped for more than what I got in this story. I wasn't impressed with any of the performances. It felt flat and uninspired. Maybe the actors' hearts weren't in it.
