Star Trek: The Next Generation 4.22

Half a Life

Lwaxana Troi, Counselor Deanna Troi's mother, is aboard the Enterprise when Timicin, a scientist from Kaelon II boards the starship. She immediately attaches herself to him and a bond develops between them. Timicin conducts tests while aboard the Enterprise in the hope that they will result in a viable way to save the star around which Kaelon II orbits. The tests prove unsuccessful.

Timicin is approaching 60 years of age. He is duty bound to return home and experience Resolution, ritual death. All people on Kaelon II regardless of their condition at age 60 are compelled to experience Resolution. Timicin accepts the practice but Lwaxana does not. She argues valiantly against his intent to return home to experience Resolution.

Something Lwaxana says finally says gets through to Timicin and he briefly decides to request asylum aboard the Enterprise. His people apply different kinds of pressure and eventually Timicin decides that he will return home for Resolution.

Galaxy's Child

Doctor Leah Brahms visits the Enterprise, the ship whose engines she helped to develop. Lieutenant Commander La Forge worked with a Holodeck recreation of Doctor Brahms once in the past, see 3.06 (Booby Trap). He knows quite a bit about her and assumes based on his working relationship with the holographic version of Doctor Brahms that they will get along.

Things don't work out between La Forge and Doctor Brahms quite as he hoped they would. She doesn't care for the modifications he has made to the Enterprise's engines or for his explanations as to why the modifications were made. She shuts him down when he tries to extend the hand of friendship by pointing out that she is married, something that he didn't know.

The Nth Degree

The Enterprise arrives at the Argus Array, a large unmanned space telescope that is in need of repair. They find a probe of unknown origin near the telescope. Lieutenant Commander La Forge and Lieutenant Barclay investigate the probe from one of the Enterprise's shuttles. Barclay gets injured while they are studying the probe but recovers fairly quickly after they return to the Enterprise.

La Forge and other members of the crew notice that Barclay isn't quite the man he used to be. He is considerably more intelligent, more confident, and changed in many other non-visible ways. A scan by Doctor Crusher confirms that his brain is operating at a level that is unheard of for humans. Barclay estimates that his IQ is now somewhere close to 1500.

The peace negotiations cannot be delayed as both sides are gearing up for war. Commander Riker volunteers to become the host for Odan until the replacement arrives.

Data's Day

Data narrates a message to Commander Maddox about his day on the Enterprise. The most significant events are (1) the upcoming marriage of Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa and (2) the presence of ambassador T'Pel whom the Enterprise is transporting to a meeting with representatives of the Romulan Empire.

The wedding almost doesn't happen because Keiko has second thoughts about marrying Miles. It isn't clear what it is that causes her to (temporarily) call off the wedding but she does.
