Data's Day
Data narrates a message to Commander Maddox about his day on the Enterprise. The most significant events are (1) the upcoming marriage of Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa and (2) the presence of ambassador T'Pel whom the Enterprise is transporting to a meeting with representatives of the Romulan Empire.
The wedding almost doesn't happen because Keiko has second thoughts about marrying Miles. It isn't clear what it is that causes her to (temporarily) call off the wedding but she does.
Data gets dancing lessons from Doctor Crusher. She teaches him how to tap dance before he explains that he wants to be ready to dance at the wedding.
The ambassador is transported into the neutral zone by the Enterprise where it meets up with a Romulan warbird. The Enterprise attempts to send the ambassador over to the Romulan ship by transporter but she is seemingly killed in a transporter malfunction. Data is put in charge of the investigation into the incident.
Thoughts
Commander Maddox was the Starfleet officer who attempted to force Data to unwillingly take part in experiments in 2.09 (The Measure of a Man).
The narration by Data served as a good tool to weave together a couple disparate storylines. It didn't do much for me other than that. I didn't think about it very much. It was just there in the background.
Events from this episode do get referenced in at least two other episodes. The wedding gets a mention in the next episode, 4.12 (The Wounded), and the incident with the ambassador gets referenced in 4.21 (The Drumhead).
I knew how the storyline involving the ambassador was going to end because I recently watched The Drumhead. It took some of the tension out of the episode but it was also interesting to see how exactly it played out. I was a little surprised by how easily it was that the ambassador fooled Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise.
This is a decent episode but I wouldn't call it great or terribly memorable.
