Ensign Ro
Captain Picard is saddled with a new crew member, Ensign Ro Laren, by Admiral Kennelly after a Starfleet outpost is attacked by Bajoran terrorists. Ensign Ro was serving time in a Starfleet prison prior to the assignment. Captain Picard is given the task of finding the Bajoran terrorists who attacked the outpost and bringing them to justice.
Ensign Ro, who is also Bajoran, helps Captain Picard to contact the terrorists. All is not as it seems. Ensign Ro finally comes clean and tells the Captain about how Admiral Kennelly has stayed in contact with her. Captain Picard doesn't care for the Admiral's interference. He does what he can to interfere with the Admiral's plans with some help from Ensign Ro.
I don't recall watching this episode before although I have seen subsequent episodes in which Ensign Ro appears.
This is the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation I have watched since May 2021.
This episode is mostly Picard and Ro. Guinan and Riker play important roles but don't get as many lines or scenes.
This was a good episode but there are some missing pieces to this puzzle. The important thing here is that Picard is getting played by the admiral. He doesn't realize that at first. Once he realizes that Ensign Ro isn't the source of his problems he changes his tune.
I listened to the Mission Log Podcast episode about Ensign Ro (the episode, not the character) after watching this episode. Their analysis of the episode was quite good. Some of their quibbles are things that occurred to me and some are not although now that they pointed them out...
Overall I'm glad I watched this one but I wouldn't say it was great. It is not essential viewing for the casual viewer.
