A Vegan task force, led by Zuril, arrives in Tokyo at night. They set up in an abandonded building. They are spotted by Kiyoshi, a young boy, who is home alone with Budo Budo, his pet beetle. Zuril sees the boy watching them.
The next day Zuril finds Kiyoshi with his beetle in a park. Zuril hypnotizes the boy and takes him and Budo Budo back to his temporary headquarters.
Maria and Kouji are visiting Tokyo that very day. They are spotted by the Vegans. Maria and Kouji get into an argument. She runs off, leaving Kouji behind. She is lured into a trap and attacked by a Vegan motorcycle gang who use sleeping gas on her.
Kouji goes looking for Maria but only finds Kiyoshi. The boy takes him to the headquarters where Maria is being held prisoner. He frees her but then Budo Budo, who has been transformed from a small beetle into a giant saucer beast, attacks. It wrecks havoc in Tokyo.
Kouji calls to the Space Science Center for help. Duke Fleed gets to Tokyo as fast as he can in Grendizer. He brings Double Spazer and Drill Spazer with him. Together the three members of the Grendizer team battle and ultimately defeat the giant beetle.
Thoughts
This one was on the weirder side. It felt like it might have been inspired by horror films in which a child bonds with a critter, which later becomes huge and threatens a city. I say that mostly because that is the one sentence summary of this episode and because I am pretty sure that there are movies out there that match that description.
Not great, on the whole. Once again the Vegans seem to be spotlighted. Gandal is in this episode but Hikaru, Danbei, and Goro are not. Duke Fleed spends most of this episode in Grandizer.
