Batman Returns (1992)

Batman Returns (1992)

starring Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Keaton
directed by Tim Burton

126 minutes

Oswald Cobblepot abandoned by his parents (who find him disgusting) is adopted by penguins that live in the sewers beneath Gotham. Decades later he allies himself with criminals from the Red Triangle Circus.

Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), secretary to Gotham industrialist (and all around bad guy) Max Shreck, displeases her boss one too many times. He pushes her out a window. She falls several stories but miraculously comes back to life. She designs herself a costume and starts calling herself Catwoman.

Catwoman has a run in with Batman. He injures her. She takes it personally. Cobblepot is talked into running for mayor by Shreck. Catwoman and Cobblepot team up briefly to discredit Batman. Bruce and Selina have a brief but ill fated romance. Cobblepot's bid to become mayor falls apart. Other stuff happens.

Thoughts

I have seen this movie at least a few times before. The last time I watched it was in 2014. Why did I watch it again? I wanted to believe that my memory was faulty. I wanted to write about it after freshly viewing it. I had a feeling that I wouldn't love it this time around but I hoped that I would find more good stuff in it than I remembered there being.

This movie is not awful but it is not good. It feels like it lacks a cohesive story. It is overloaded. It consists of a series of moments that don't flow together. Every once in a while it made me smile but this movie pales in comparison to its predecessor, Batman (1989).

I do not like this movie. If I see it again it will be too soon.
