starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter
directed by Don Siegel
80 minutes
Dr. Miles Bennell returns to Santa Mira where he discovers that more and more people seem to be reporting that there is something wrong with their family and friends.
Miles shrugs it off at first but after a date with Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter), He gets a call from a couple friends, Jack and Teddy, who have found a body that looks remarkably like Jack.
Miles, Becky, Jack, and Teddy go into crisis mode. They soon discover that the local authorities have been compromised. They unsuccessfully try to reach the FBI and warn the world outside of Santa Mira.
The prospects for survival grow dim as more and more citizens of Santa Mira are converted by the giant seed pods into unfeeling pod people. Miles and Becky go on the run as they try to make it out of Santa Mira and let the outside world know about the spreading threat.
Thoughts
I've seen Kevin McCarthy before in numerous films but this is the first thing that he's been in that I've seen in about a decade.
Carolyn Jones played the part of Teddy. I know her best from the original Addams Family TV show in which she played Morticia.
This was my first time watching either this film or the 1978 remake. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's kind of over the top silly in places but it is still a lot of fun although the ending leaves a little bit to be desired. I learned after watching the movie that the framing sequence that opens and closes the movie was not the director's idea but was added by the studio. I would rate the movie slightly higher without the framing sequence which only adds a few minutes to the film but dulls its edge.
