No Small Parts
The Cerritos is getting ready to leave Beta III when Captain Freeman discovers that Mariner and Boimler are still on the planet. Boimler breaks the news to Mariner that he knows that the captain is her mother just as the Cerritos is trying to contact them. Everyone aboard learns the secret pretty quickly and starts treating Marniner like royalty.
The Cerritos gets a distress call from the USS Solvang. They rush in to help but it is too late. The Solvang has been destroyed by a Pakled ship which is in the process of salvaging pieces from the Solvang. The Pakled ship quickly turns its attention toward the Cerritos and starts to rip it apart.
Mariner comes up with a plan to deal with the Pakleds. Rutherford creates a virus in the holodeck, with some help from Badgey. The Pakleds board the Cerritos and fighting breaks out everywhere. Captain Freeman gets injured and has to be rushed to sick bay. Rutherford uploads the virus to his cybernetic implant. Shaxs grabs Rutherford and together the board a shuttlecraft and head to the Pakled ship.
Rutherford starts to upload the virus once they are aboard the Pakled ship. Rutherford loses his cybernetic implant but makes it back to what's left of the Cerritos thanks to Shaxs who sacrifices himself.
The Pakled ship is destroyed but then more Pakled ships show up. It doesn't look good for the Cerritos but then the USS Titan, under the command of Captain William T. Riker, shows up and saves the day.
Tendi goes to see Rutherford in the hospital and discovers that he has lost some of his memory and doesn't remember her. Boimler gets a promotion to lieutenant junior grade and a transfer to the Titan. Mariner, who was thinking of asking for a transfer makes peace with Captain Freeman and agrees to stay aboard the Cerritos which has undergone expensive repairs.
Thoughts
Beta III, the planet where the story began also figured into an episode of The Original Series. I might have seen it before but not recently.
Deanna Troi is also in this episode. She and Will Riker are married.
I have no idea where things are going from here, with Boimler now aboard the Titan. I assume that he will be back aboard the Cerritos before long, at some point in the next season.
Wow! The previous episode was great but this one was off the charts. It even got me a bit emotional in places, what with the death of Shaxs and Rutherford losing his memory. It also made me laugh in places. I was really worried towards the end of the episode that it might end on a cliffhanger. I'm very happy that it did not although they did leave some stuff up in the air.
