Moonlighting 3.02

The Man Who Cried Wife

James Bower hires David and Maddie to figure out what's going on with Melissa, his wife. He thought he killed her a week ago but he's been getting phone calls from her since the night he killed her.

James went back to the spot where he buried her body but it wasn't there. He doesn't know what to do. Maddie is okay taking the case until she learns that he hit and killed his wife. Maddie wants to drop the case. She wants David to drop it too but he insists on pursuing it.

David stays on the case despite Maddie's orders to back off. He has a wire tap set up. The next time James gets a call from Melissa he gets the number and address from where she is calling. David, Maddie, and James head out there but things kind of go sideways when Melissa spots them and takes off in her car.

Thoughts

Alley Mills in this episode. She plays Claire, Melissa's older sister. She is best known for playing the mother in The Wonder Years (1988-93), a show which I don't think I have ever watched, and being on the Bold and the Beautiful (2006-24). Her face looked familiar but it wasn't until I looked her up after the show that I realized who she was.

I didn't understand the motivations of the guest stars in this episode. Saying that James killed his wife spontaneously wasn't enough for me. It just didn't seem like he had it in him to do that. I also didn't understand Claire's motivations in helping her brother-in-law cover up the crime. I think the audience was supposed to believe that she was in love with James but I just didn't feel it.

I don't recall seeing this episode before. It's not a good one. It doesn't make sense to me. It just didn't feel right. Shows like this often soar or crash to the ground based on the performances of the the guest stars. This one crashed to the ground in my eyes.
