Moonlighting 3.01

The Son Also Rises

David Addison, Sr. comes to town. He's there because he is getting married. David Addison, Jr. avoids his father at first but Maddie works it so that Jr. has to talk to Sr. David learns that his father is getting remarried. He's delighted until he meets Stephanie, his father's bride to be.

David Jr. had a one-night-stand with Stephanie, years ago. He tells Maddie about how he met Stephanie (the first time around) and how he can't imagine Stephanie being his father's wife. He goes on a drinking binge but he recovers in time for the wedding. Maddie goes as his plus one.

David is his father's best man. David pulls Stephanie aside in the middle of the ceremony. He has to talk to her about what happened between them four years ago. She misunderstands and tells him about how she used to regularly get drunk and pick up men in a bar back in Philly. She also tells him about how she met his father.

David realizes that Stephanie doesn't remember him. He decides that everything will be okay and escorts her back to the altar so that she and his father can complete the ceremony.

Thoughts

This is one of those rare episodes in which there is no case or crime for Maddie and David to investigate.

I'm not sure what to make of the cold open, in which it is revealed that David's mother just died because Moonlighting did so poorly at the Emmys, even though it was nominated in 16 different categories.

Paul Sorvino played the part of David's father. I've seen him in a few movies in the past few years but none in which he played the lead. This is his only appearance in an episode of Moonlighting.

Charles Rocket played the part of Richard Addison, David's brother. This is the second episode of Moonlighting in which he has appeared. He was previously seen in 2.01 (Brother Can You Spare a Blonde?) and will appear in four more episodes of Moonlighting.

There were a few laughs in this episode but it was mostly dramatic and not silly or funny. It was a real change of pace. It definitely wasn't what I expected. It was very good.
