L'Alsace et la Lorraine
or Alsace and Lorraine
11 Nov 1943
Ansleme takes a couple men and cuts the phone lines into Villeneuve. Marguerite seduces Rainer and takes him back to her bedroom. She gets his keys and hands them off to Lucienne, who sneaked into the room. Lucienne goes to the radio room and disables the radio using instructions that Marguerite gave her.
Someone calls the German HQ in Villeneuve pretending to be the German outpost in Moissey, the next town over and saying that they were being overrun by terrorists. Kollwitz takes most of the German soldiers in Villeneuve and heads to Moissey.
Resistance fighters go to Chassagne and Jeanine's home but Chassagne sees them coming. He and Jeanine lock themselves in a closet. The Resistance fighters don't find them and move on. Chassagne goes into town to find the police.
Antoine and Anselme lead their band of Resistance fighters into Villeneuve. They wait on the outskirts of town.
Chassagne gets to the police station but finds (without being detected) that someone is holding the policemen hostage. He goes to the German HQ and tries to convince someone to do something about the Resistance. They go to the radio room but Lucienne locked the door behind her. They get Rainer but he can't find his key for the door and has to go get a spare.
Lucienne doesn't know what to do but at the last minute she remembers that there is a trap door that leads out of the radio room and escapes that way.
Antoine and his men march part of the way into town but they still have not heard the church bell ring, the sign that the wireless radio has been sabotaged. They are about to turn around when they hear it. They march into town where citizens of Villeneuve join with them as they lay a wreath on the town's memorial to men who died in World War I.
Müller saw what was going on and dressed up in one of Daniel's suits and is present at the ceremony. He doesn't try to interfere. Gustave is also there. He isn't with Müller but they see one another but neither says anything.
Antoine makes a speech and then a celebration breaks out. Chassagne shows up at the celebration. Many of the town's people start to beat him up. They have him on the ground. Antoine sees what's going on and gets them to stop. Some of Antoine's men take Chassagne away on orders from Antoine and then turn him loose.
The celebration goes on a little too long. They receive word that the Germans are on their way back but no one wants to stop celebrating. Antoine desperately tries to get his men to leave but no one except Anselme will listen to him but eventually he causes a panic when he convinces everyone that the German are on their way back into town.
Thoughts
Marie, Raymond, Jules, Suzanne, and Daniel are not in this episode. Hortense and Marcel are in it but only briefly.
I was convinced that Claude or Marguerite was going to get killed in this episode. I was tense as I watched this episode. I was convinced that Chassagne was going to do something crazy like shoot Claude. I'm still not convinced that these three (Claude, Marguerite, Chassagne) will still be alive at the end of the season.
They've played fast and loose with the dates over the course of the last few episodes. It was late October a few episodes ago but now all of a sudden it is Nov 11. They conveniently skipped over some days without really explaining how. That's my read of the situation.
There's going to be reprisals for what happened in this episode. I don't expect the next episode to be a light one.
This was a very good episode although I don't understand where all the missing characters were. There are some plot holes here.
