Un Village Français 5.07

La Livraison
or The Delivery

Marie and Suzanne meet with Antoine in the woods. They ask for his help. He agrees to help them but Claude thinks that it is a bad idea.

Heinrich confronts Hortense about her source for the morphine. He tells her that he knows she is lying. She tells him that he got it from Chassagne. He kicks her out because he feels as if he can't trust her.

Lucienne starts to have second thoughts about trusting Marguerite after she discovers that Marguerite lied to her. She goes looking in Marguerite's room when she isn't there and finds a picture of Camille, Marguerite's ex. Marguerite told Lucienne that Camille was a man but the picture she finds is of a woman and has Camille's name on it.

Servier demotes Marchetti. He tells him that someone named Blanchon will be there soon to take over the police in Villeneuve. Marchetti goes home and finds Eliane trying to hang herself. He cuts her down. She blames herself for what happened to Josephine. Marchetti suggests that they should get married.

Hortense turns to her mother for help. Her mother has no time for Hortense but agrees to take her in. Hortense gets sidetracked when she goes to Daniel's house to get some things before heading to the train station. The place is deserted but then Gutave and Tequiero show up. Hortense tries to explain the situation to her mother but winds up angrily hanging up on her after her mother refuses to let her bring Gustave with her.

Antoine comes up with a plan to try and help Marcel, Anselme, and Raoul. The plan is to slip one of them a pistol as they are being escorted out of the German HQ in Villeneuve. He goes to Raymond for help. Raymond agrees to help but Eliane shows up while they are talking. She sees the plans and Antoine. She goes home and tells Marchetti what she saw.

Antoine and Raymond proceed with the plan. They have trouble getting in to the German HQ but they do. They sit down on a bench and wait. They were told that the three prisoners (Marcel, Anselme, Raoul) were going to be transferred at 3 PM. They see the prisoners but Antoine realizes at the last moment that there's a fatal flaw in their plan.

Thoughts

I thought the story was supposed to jump forward about ten days at this point. That's what I read on the French Wikipedia page for the show but the way this episode plays out it seems like it takes place very soon after the previous one, possible the next day. There is no date stamp at the beginning of this episode.

Where were Gustave and Tequiero headed in the previous episode? They returned home. No explanation is given.

I don't know what to make of the plan to slip Anselme a gun as he was being escorted out of the German HQ. Does no one in town recognize Antoine? The plan seemed impossible to carry out before they realized that it was impossible. I don't see how they could have hoped to get close enough to them to hand over a loaded gun to Anselme.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that things will work out in the end to some degree for Antoine and Raymond. My guess is that there will be an bombing raid that will shake things up in Villeneuve and in the confusion they will escape with at least one of the three prisoners.

I'm not sure how I feel about Hortense finally finding some backbone and standing up to her mother, who is not seen but only heard over the telephone. Hortense has gone quite a ways down the road towards being a repulsive person at this point. Leaving her husband for a German officer for the childish reasons that she did is pretty close to unforgivable.

This was an okay but it was not great.
