starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman
directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
119 minutes
David (Colin Farrell) finds himself alone, after his wife leaves him. He is forced to check into a hotel where other single people live. The manager of the hotel (Olivia Colman) explains to him that he has 45 days to find a mate, among the other single people at the hotel, or else he will be changed into an animal of his choosing. David has picked a lobster.
David spends most of the 45 days unsuccessfully trying to connect with different women. He finally settles on a sadistic woman. That relationship falls apart during the trial period after she kills his dog, who used to be his brother.
Desperate, David flees the hotel into the woods. There he joins a group of loners who also live by certain strict rules. There are no romantic relationships aloud among the loners. David quickly falls for a woman (Rachel Weisz) who is, like him, near sighted. This creates complications because of the rule against romantic relationships among the loners.
Thoughts
The first hour of this movie takes place at the hotel and the second hour takes place in the woods.
The line readings by many of the actors came across as flat to my ears. I think that is how the director likes it. Sometimes it worked for me but not always.
This movie is weird. I get it in places. I laughed in places. It was all just so surreal and absurd. I resisted watching this movie for a long time. It didn't sound like my kind of movie. I think my original impression was correct. Despite laughing a number of times, despite not being able to turn away from it or turn it off, I can't say that I really enjoyed it much or felt like I got enough out of it.
The Fabric of Attraction: Concocting The Lobster
22 minutes
This was a DVD extra that was included on the DVD that I borrowed from the library. The focus is partly on the story but mostly on how it was made and how Yorgos Lanthimos works. A number of people from the cast were interviewed for this DVD extra but there are also a number of crew members who were interviewed for it.
It didn't really change my mind about how I feel about the movie.
