Doctor Who (1963) 12.04.02

Genesis of the Daleks - Part Two

Sarah Jane watches Davros, the Dalek, and the others leave. She isn't noticed by them but a group of Mutos finds her. One of them wants to kill her, another Muto objects. They are interrupted by a Thal patrol. Sarah and the Muto who protected her are taken prisoner.

The Doctor and Harry are examined first by the military. They remove the time ring that the Time Lord gave to the Doctor. Harry and the Doctor are then taken to Ronson, one of the scientists for interrogation.

Davros interrupts the interrogation to demonstrate the latest Mark III travel machine (Dalek) as they are being called at this time. It is armed. It almost kills the Doctor and Harry but Ronson intervenes. Davros is very angry.

Sarah and the Muto are taken to the Thal dome. There they are forced to help arm a large rocket which will be launched at the Kaled City. Handling the munitions exposes them to deadly radiation. Sarah and the others come up with an escape plan after their first shift of arming the rocket.

Ronson shows the Doctor and Harry what Davros has planned. How he plans to mutate the Kaled so that they can fit inside the Mark III travel machines. Ronson is horrified by what Davros intends to do. Ronson helps the Doctor and Harry escape with the understanding that they will find the leaders of the Kaled government and tell them about what Davros is up to.

Sarah and the Mutos execute their escape plan. They climb the scaffolding that surrounds the rocket in an attempt to reach the dome itself. The Thal guards find out what's going on and start shooting at the prisoners that are trying to escape. Sarah slips and falls from a great height as the episode ends.

Thoughts

Why Security Chief Nyder pick Ronson to be the one to interrogate the Doctor and Harry? How blind is Nyder to where Ronson's loyalties lie? Ronson is more than just disloyal to Davros' cause, he's also setting himself up for overall failure. How is he going to explain the disappearance of two prisoners? Where were the guards? How incompetent are the guards that they weren't around to spot Ronson sneaking the prisoners out? No wonder the Kaleds are having so much trouble defeating the Thals.

Peter Miles (Nyder), Tom Baker (The Doctor), and Elisabeth Salden (Sarah Jane Smith) are on the commentary track for this episode.

This is still a lot of fun. Harry doesn't get much to do other than follow the Doctor around but at least Sarah Jane gets to be the star of her own part of the story.
