Renji's Confrontation
Word spreads within the Seireitei about what happened to the three shinigami who encountered the ryoka (outsiders) and about the decimation of 11th squad.
Hanataro leads Ichigo and Ganju through the sewers below the Seireitei and explains to them why he’s helping them. He tells them about all the things he learned from Rukia while cleaning her jail cell.
Ichigo, Ganju, and Hanataro emerge from the sewers only to find someone waiting for them, Renji. Ichigo’s spirit energy starts to rise as he gets ready to clash with Renji. Ichigo’s friends in other parts of the Seireitei (Chard, Orihime, Uryū) sense Ichigo’s spirit energy and rush to find him.
Ichigo and Renji begin fighting. Renji explains as the fight begins that he is considerably stronger than he was when they last fought. Ichigo is not phased by the reveal.
Ichigo's previous fight with Renji started in 1.16 The Encounter, Renji Abarai! and spilled over into the next episode. In the end it was Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia's older brother, who stopped Ichigo that time around.
I think that there was as much of Rukia in this episode as there has been in quite a while. One thing that I don't like about this season and the next one is that she spends most of that time on the sidelines waiting to be released from her jail cell. I don't know how big of a role she plays in the series after the third season.
This episode flew by and didn't contain any filler although there was a fair amount of flashback in it while Hanataro was telling his story to Ichigo and Ganju. It has been at least two episodes since Yoruichi last made an appearance.
