Seven Chances (1925)

Seven Chances (1925)

starring Buster Keaton
directed by Buster Keaton

56 minutes

Stock broker Jimmie Shannon (Buster Keaton) learns that his grandfather has died and left him 7 million dollars. There's just one catch, in order to get the money he has to be married no later than 7 PM on the day he turns 27. The day he gets this news is his 27th birthday.

Billy Meekin, Jimmie's business partner, tries to help him find a bride in a hurry by getting a story run in the afternoon newspaper. Hundreds of women show up eager to marry Jimmie which leads to chase scene that goes on and on.

Thoughts

I saw this movie as the back half of a double feature at the Silent Cinema Showcase at the AFI Silver Theater. The other film in the double feature also starred Buster Keaton.

One strike against this movie is the use of black face. I feel that it should be pointed out. It's just one character and he doesn't get a ton of screen time but it's there and it was pretty obvious.

Jean Arthur has a small part in this movie. She plays a receptionist. Her hair is dark, which I don't think is the case in the majority of her films. It isn't a blink and you miss it performance but she probably isn't in more than a minute's worth of the movie.

Aside from my qualms with the film having a character in black face I enjoyed this movie very much. I really liked the chase scene that ends the movie.
