Superman (David Corenswet) gets beat up by a supervillain named the Hammer of Boravia while the country of Boravia is threatening to invade Jarhanpur, one of its neighbors. The masked villain turns out to be working for Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) who is in turn working with the Boravian president. The Hammer of Boravia is actually Ultraman, one of Luthor's superpowered lackeys.
Lex Luthor and Ultraman break into the Fortress of Solitude. Angela Spica (aka the Engineer) found it for him. Together, the three of them, wreck havoc in Superman's secret hideout, kidnap Krypto (the superdog), and break into Superman's computer.
Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), who is dating Superman and knows that he and Clark Kent are the same person questions his approach to fighting the Hammer of Boravia. Superman fails to follow her logic. He leaves her apartment in a huff.
Superman finds the mess that Luthor and his henchmen left at the Fortress of Solitude. Superman gets his name dragged through the mud by a video of his parents that Luthor found on Superman's computer and modified. Superman, desperate to find Krypto, turns himself over to the authorities who hand him off to Lex Luthor.
Luthor deposits Superman in a pocket dimension in a jail cell with Metamorpho to keep him docile. Lois Lane teams up with Mr. Terrific, who along with Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, helped Superman fight a giant monster that Lex Luthor unleashed on Metropolis. Together they find and help get Superman, Krypto, and Metamorpho (who changed sides after Superman did him a solid) out of the pocket dimension.
Luthor opens a dimensional rift that threatens to destroy Metropolis, the Earth, and possibly the known universe. Superman confronts Luthor who sicks his two superpowered lackeys on him.
Thoughts
At its heart this movie seems to be a movie about Superman's relationships with Lex Luthor and Lois Lane. The one with Luthor seems to take precedence but Lois plays an important part in this film even when she isn't with Superman.
I enjoyed this film very much. It is not perfect or near perfect but it was very good. There are a lot of things that get thrown in the mix, possibly a few too many things, but I think that they did a good job with the way the various elements were combined.
Notes
This is the first movie I have seen in which David Corenswet appeared. I have seen a couple movies in which Nicholas Hoult appeared, The Favourite (2018) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). The only thing that I have seen in which Rachel Brosnahan appeared is the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
There are a few other familiar faces in this movie including Wendell Pierce, Nathan Fillion, Frank Grillo, Michael Ian Black, and Bradley Cooper.
