Star Trek: The Next Generation 1.15

11001001

The Enterprise docks at Starbase 74 for repairs. Most of the crew leaves the ship for some time off. Commander Riker keeps an eye on the Bynars, aliens, who are making repairs to the ship's computers. He asks a couple of them about the repairs that they are making to Holodeck 4. They tell him that their repairs to the Holodeck are complete if he would like to give it a try.

Commander Riker has the Holodeck create a program that simulates a New Orleans nightclub. He enters and is blown away by how real it looks. He plays with a trio of musicians. There is one person in the audience, Minuet, also a hologram.

Riker has Minuet to himself until Captain Picard comes looking for him and makes his way to Holodeck 4. Riker and Picard sit and talk to Minuet for a while.

Geordi and Data get a call from Wesley who was left on the bridge monitoring the Bynars. He tells them that something is wrong in engineering. They head there and discover that the ship is in danger of exploding. Everyone is evacuated except Picard and Riker who don't receive the warning.

Picard finally decides that he must return to the bridge. Minuet begs him to stay but he insists on leaving the Holodeck. Picard and Riker immediately become aware (once the door to the Holodeck opens) that something is wrong because the ship has gone to red alert and no one else, other than a few Bynars are aboard.

Picard and Riker make their way to the bridge where they discover that the Bynars have collapsed. The Captain and First Officer, together, discover what it is going on and set about to set things straight.

The episode ends with Riker returning to the Holodeck to see Minuet. He calls up the Holodeck program but Minuet has changed and isn't the same as she was when he was last in the New Orleans nightclub.

Thoughts

The is the first episode of The Next Generation in which Majel Barrett is the voice of the computer. There is more than one computer voice in this episode. The other one is a male voice and according to the Mission Log podcast it is Michael Dorn (Worf).

The Bynars are brought on board by a human Starfleet officer, Commander Quinteros. He looks very much like Captain Picard with a goatee but his voice is very different. It is a bit curious when the Enterprise is evacuated that he seems to forget completely about the Bynars.

This is the first of three episodes in which Minuet appears. I don't believe that I have seen either of the other two episodes.

Deanna Troi is not in this episode. Worf, Tasha Yar, and Doctor Crusher are in this episode but don't play significant parts.

This episode was interesting. It kept me engaged but the part with the Bynars failed to really grab me.
