The Galileo Seven
The Enterprise is on its way to deliver emergency supplies to Makus III when Captain Kirk decides that they have enough time to investigate an unusual space phenomenon. Galactic High Commissioner Ferris, who is on board to oversee the delivery of the relief supplies, doesn't approve but Captain Kirk points out that they are ahead of schedule.
Mister Spock plus six others (Doctor McCoy, Lieutenant Commander Scott, Lieutenant Boma, Lieutenant Gaetano, Lieutenant Latimer, Yeoman Mears) aboard the Galileo, one of the Enterprise's shuttlecraft, fly into the quasar-like phenomenon near Murasaki 312. The Galileo loses contact with the Enterprise and makes an emergency landing on Taurus II, the only inhabitable planet within the system.
Captain Kirk sends out search parties that don't have any luck in locating the missing crew members.
Lieutenant Commander Scott does what he can to get the Galileo back up and running but quickly discovers that all the remaining fuel was lost during the crash landing. He comes up with a plan to use energy from the phasers to power the ship. The Galileo is attacked by giant, spear wielding humanoids who kill two of them (Latimer, Gaetano) in separate incidents.
Spock almost has a rebellion on his hands when he refuses to take the time to bury the dead crewmen. He finally relents. A quick burial occurs after which the Galileo takes off and just barely manages to catch the attention of the Enterprise after Mr. Spock does something desperate and illogical.
Thoughts
I might have seen this episode before but I don't have any clear recollections of watching it in the past.
Galactic High Commissioner Ferris frequently reminds Captain Kirk that time is running out. He vanishes from the story after time runs out and the Enterprise starts to depart Taurus II without locating Spock and the others.
The episode ends with Kirk and the rest of the bridge crew laughing at Spock. He defended his actions by insisting that what he did (although it might have illogical) was the logical thing to do.
Phyllis Douglas played the part of Yeoman Mears. Douglas appeared in one more episode of the series but playing a different character, during the third season of the show.
This was the first time that Spock was shown in command of an away team. He bumps heads with McCoy and Boma on multiple occasions.
This was a decent but not great episode of the series, only worth watching if you are a completist or enjoy watching Spock and McCoy go at one another.
