The Mystery of Chess Boxing (1979)

The Mystery of Chess Boxing (1979)

starring Yi-Min Li, Jack Long, and Kwan-Wu Lung
directed by Joseph Kuo

90 minutes

in Chinese with English subtitles

Ah Pao (Yi-Min Li) wants to improve his kung fu so that he can get revenge on the Ghost Face Killer (Kwan-Wu Lung), who killed his father. He gets into a Kung Fu school where one of the top students treats him badly. Ah Pao learns more from the school's cook about Kung Fu than he does from the other training he receives.

Ah Pao is kicked out of the school after he is suspected of having ties to the Ghost Faced Killer. Ah Pao turns to Chi Sue Tin (Jack Long), a Chinese chess expert, for more training in Kung Fu.

The Ghost Faced Killer comes around looking for Chi Sue Tin. The two men fight. Ah Pao returns to find them locked in combat and takes over fighting for Chi Sue Tin when it looks dire for his teacher. It isn't until Chi Sue Tin and Ah Pao team up that they are finally able to defeat the Ghost Faced Killer.

Thoughts

I watched the subtitled version of this movie but there is also a dubbed version. I can't find the subtitled version of this movie online but the dubbed version is out there. I jumped at the opportunity to see it in Chinese on the big screen. The subtitles were old, sometimes flashed by fairly quickly, and weren't always easy to understand even though they were in English.

The fight and training scenes in this film are great but can be a little overwhelming. I wish I was better versed in Kung Fu films so that I could have seen at least the broad differences in the styles that were called out by Ah Pao and other characters as they fought.

The movie ends very abruptly.
