We're No Angels (1955)

We're No Angels (1955)

starring Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, Peter Ustinov
directed by Michael Curtiz

106 minutes

Dec 24, 1895. Convicts Joseph (Humphrey Bogart), Albert (Aldo Ray), and Jules (Peter Ustinov) escape from Devil's Island to a nearby town in French Guiana. They pretend to be on a work release program while they try and find a way back to France. They take refuge with the manager of a store that sells clothes for men and other goods. Felix, the store manager, his wife Amelie and his daughter Isabelle are used to seeing prisoners on work release around town and think nothing of hiring them to fix the roof.

Joseph, Albert, and Jules take pity on Felix and his family. The three convicts do what they can over the course of 24 hours to make better the lives of Felix, Amelie, and Isabelle.

Thoughts

This is fairly light fare. It is meant to be funny. I smiled a few times but it didn't make me laugh. It is adapted from a Broadway play which itself was adapted from a French novel. I have not seen the 1989 remake.
