Diner (1982)

Diner (1982)

starring Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Tim Daly, Ellen Barkin, Paul Reiser
written and directed by Barry Levinson

110 minutes

Five friends hang out and experience life in Baltimore in 1959. Eddie (Steve Guttenberg) is getting ready to get married. Shrevie (Daniel Stern) is married to Beth (Ellen Barkin). Billy (Tim Daly) wants to get married. Fenwick (Kevin Bacon) and Boogie (Mickey Rourke) both seem to be drifting through life.

Thoughts

I've seen all of the principal actors in other movies. Most of those movies came out after this one.

This is my first time watching Diner but I've seen plenty of other movies that Barry Levinson directed including Rain Man (1988), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), and Avalon (1990). This is just the second of his Baltimore films that I have seen.

There was a 30 minute behind the scenes documentary, Diner: On the Flip Side (2000), included on the DVD that I borrowed from the library. Director Barry Levinson, all the primary members of the cast (except Mickey Rourke), and a few others were in the documentary. It was fun to watch but didn't add a whole lot to the experience for me.

This was my first time watching Diner. It was about what I thought it might be. I wasn't blown away by it. I think it is good but I don't love it. It felt very episodic to me.
