Radio Days (1987)

Radio Days (1987)

starring Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Seth Green, Diane Wiest, Julie Kavner, Michael Tucker
written and directed by Woody Allen

Joe (Woody Allen) tells stories about his family and his memories of radio programs from the late 1930s to mid-1940s. The cast of characters includes a young version of himself (Seth Green), his mother (Julie Kavner) and father (Michael Tucker), his Aunt Bea (Diane Wiest), and lots of other relatives who live in the same house as them.

Joe also tells stories about Sally White (Mia Farrow) who doesn't cross paths with Joe and his family. She starts out as a cigarette girl at a prominent nightclub and rises to become a singer and performer on radio.

The version of Joe that narrates the story is not seen on screen.

Diane Wiest, Mia Farrow, and Julie Kavner were also in another movie that I watched a few weeks ago and was also directed by Woody Allen, Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). Michael Tucker was also in Diner (1982), which I watched about 10 days ago. There are a number of other familiar faces in smaller roles in this movie including Danny Aiello, Jeff Daniels, Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, and Wallace Shawn.

I saw this movie in the theater when it was first released. I recall trying to encourage some of my friends to go with me. I was into old time radio in the late 1980s. They wanted to see Platoon (1986). They didn't go with me to see Radio Days. I didn't go with them to see Platoon. I eventually saw Platoon but it was years later. Platoon wasn't released until Feb 1987, according to IMDb, even though it is coded as being released in 1986.

This film is very episodic, kind of like Hannah and Her Sisters. I enjoyed it very much. There were a number of scenes that made me laugh out loud. One scene got me laughing so hard that I was having trouble breathing. I paused the movie and walked away until I calmed down and felt like I could continue watching.
