Star Trek: The Next Generation 1.10

Haven

The Enterprise approaches the planet Haven. Commander Riker is summoned to Transporter Room 3 in time to see a wedding present for Counselor Troi beamed aboard.

Deanna shares the news (with Captain Picard) that she is about to get married. It is an arranged marriage that was agreed upon years ago when Deanna and her husband to be were much younger. Wyatt Miller (the groom), his parents, and Lwaxana Troi (Deanna’s mother) beam aboard.

Lwaxana Troi gets settled in her quarters aboard the Enterprise. Deanna talks to Riley and learns that she isn’t exactly what he expected. He is a doctor but he is also an artist. He has dreamed for years of a woman whom he assumed was Deanna. He made drawings of the woman from his dreams but she looks nothing like Deanna.

A Tarellian ship approaches Haven. The Tarellians were believed to be extinct, wiped out by a plague. The powers that be on Haven implore Captain Picard to honor the treaty with the Federation and protect them from the Tarellians.

Captain Picard discusses the approaching Tarellian ship with the bridge crew. A dinner is held in advance of the wedding. There is some disagreement over what form the wedding ceremony should take. Lwaxana Troi has very definite ideas but so do Wyatt's parents. The dinner ends with Counselor Troi shouting at her mother and then leaving the room.

Deanna talks to Will on the Holodeck. Their conversation gets interrupted by Wyatt. Will leaves and lets Deanna and Wyatt talk.

The Tarellian ship gets very close to the Enterprise and finally opens a communications channel revealing a woman who looks just like the woman from Wyatt's dreams.

Wyatt makes a decision. He takes some medical supplies, sedates the crewman at the transporter controls, and beams himself aboard the Tarellian ship.

Thoughts

Wesley and Worf are not in this episode.

Robert Knepper played Wyatt. He was in episodes of The Flash (1.07 Power Outage), The Orville (1.04 If the Stars Should Appear), and The Visitor that I have seen. Robert Ellenstein played Wyatt's father. I've seen him in a few movies and he was in an episode of Moonlighting (1.01 Pilot) that I watched a couple years ago.

This episode introduces the character of Lwaxana Troi. She is played by Majel Barrett who was also in Star Trek (1966) as the voice of the Enterprise computer and Nurse Christine Chapel. This is the first of six episodes of The Next Generation in which Lwaxana Troi appears. She also showed up in episodes of Deep Space Nine.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen this episode before, possibly when it first aired. It felt familiar but I didn't remember all the details. It is kind of silly and it isn't one of my favorite episodes but I enjoyed watching it.
