Hualin, 1997. Lu Wenzhong is drinking with Yin Hong and one of the other women at Victoria when he gets a call from Shen Mo. He goes to see her. He wants to take her back to his place. She says that she needs a book that one of her classmates have so they go there first.

It's a trap. Shen Mo drugs Lu Wenzhong with some help from Fu Weijun and Wang Yang. Lu Wenzhong promises to give them what they want after he wakes up. He tells them about a bank draft he has in his car for 800,000 yuan.

Wang Yang and Fu Weijun take the draft and go to the bank the next moring, Yang tries to get the money but it is a time deposit. The money can't be withdrawn until a specific day which has yet to pass.

Shen Mo kills Lu Wenzhong while her brother and boyfriend are gone. Wang Yang explains to her what happened at the bank. He helps her and Fu Weijun to dispose of the body late at night in one of the vats of molten steel at Hualin Steel.

Yin Hong comes to see Shen Mo. Yin Hong implies that she knows something. Shen Mo kills her with a meat cleaver and then chops off her own hand. Fu Weijun helps her to dispose of the body. There is a replay of the scenes from the first episode when body parts were found. Shen Mo explains to Fu Weijun that she doesn't want Wang Yang to be involved with them anymore. She wants him to live a good life.

Thoughts

Wang Xiang and Ma Desheng were seen in this episode briefly in the flashback montage towards the end of the episode. There was music playing over those scenes and they did not have any lines. I do not recall seeing Gong Biao in this episode. All of the action seemed to focus on the characters mentioned in my summary.

The bank draft for 800,000 yuan. according to my research, would worth about $1.6 million in US dollars in 2025.

The show just took a real dark turn. I was right about my guess that the body was Yin Hong and not Shen Mo but I didn't foresee that it was Shen Mo who killed her. I'm seeing Shen Mo in a different light.

I think this kind of resolves a lot of things in 1997/98, with the exception of the fates of Shen Mo and Wang Yang. Most of what's left to resolve seems to take place in 2016.
