The Green Knight (2021)

The Green Knight (2021)

starring Dev Patel
written and directed by David Lowery

130 minutes

Gawain (Dev Patel) takes up the offer extended by the Green Knight on Christmas Day. He takes a sword and chops off the Green Knight's head. The understanding is that on the next Christmas Day Gawain will have to present himself in the Green Chapel and allow the Green Knight to return the favor. The Green Knight picks up his head and leaves.

One year later, as Christmas approaches, Gawain goes on a quest to find the Green Chapel and complete his part of the bargain. He meets a number of people along the way. He is robbed. He helps a dead woman find her head. He's accompanied by a fox for part of his journey. He is tested in various ways but ultimately makes his way to the Green Chapel.

Thoughts

Gawain didn't have to chop off the Green Knight's head. He only had to strike him. The Green Knight's promise was to return the blow exactly as it was done to him.

I like this movie but I wasn't bowled over by it. I found it on the whole, to be very mysterious. It was clear that Gawain was on a quest but I wasn't sure what to make of some of the encounters he had along the way. The false ending had me confused until I figured out that it was probably a false ending. I like the actual ending.

Notes

This is the first movie I have seen in which Dev Patel has appeared. There are a few other actors in this movie that I have seen in other movies including Ralph Ineson, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, and Sarita Choudhury. This is the only movie I have seen that was written or directed by David Lowery.
