The Spectral Hand
Jim Corrigan volunteers for a medical experiment in return for a reduced sentence. Barbara Gordon and Renee Montoya travel to Blackgate to witness the medical experiment. Bruce Wayne is also present. Wayne, Gordon, Montoya, and several other witnesses watch as something goes wrong and Corrigan dies on the operating table.
Corrigan returns to life later that night, Christmas Eve, as his body is driven out of the prison in a hearse. The car crashes. The two men in the front of the vehicle are killed. Corrigan survives and makes his way back to Gotham. He uses his recently acquired supernatural abilities to locate and kill three men he had arrested when he was still alive. All three of his victims recognize him and ask him what he wants. His only response is, "Vengeance."
Batman catches up to Corrigan on a subway train. The two men fight but Corrigan knocks Batman off the train. Corrigan makes his way to Barbara Gordon's home. She knows he's coming thanks to a call from Batman. Corrigan confronts her but things don't go as they did with the three men he hunted down.
Thoughts
Corrigan appeared in two episodes in season one, the second of which was 1.07 Moving Target. This was the only episode in the second season in which he appeared.
This was a low key episode but it was very good. I really like the twist at the end. It didn't take me completely by surprise but I didn't see it coming from a mile away.
I'm halfway through this season and I'm already sad that there's only five more episodes to go. I really hope this show gets a third season.
Notes
Jim Corrigan was the alter ego of The Spectre in the comic books. He was a much more powerful being in the comic books. In this story, after the failed medical experiment, he is extremely strong and exhibits some supernatural abilities (that are never really explained) but for the most part he looks more like a zombie than he does like his comic book counterpart.
