Star Trek (1966) 2.13

Obsession

The crew of the Enterprise encounters a creature on the planet Argus X that Kirk encountered 11 years earlier. The creature, which resembles a cloud of smoke, attacked the crew of the USS Farragut, killing 200 crew persons including Captain Garrovick. Kirk has been haunted by the experience ever since.

The Enterprise is due to meetup with the USS Yorktown but Kirk insists on delaying the meeting until the smoke creature has been stopped. The Enterprise pursues the smoke creature when it leaves Argus X. They chase it until it turns and attacks the Enterprise. Phasers and photon topedos prove to be ineffective against the creature.

It gets into the Enterprise and almost kills Ensign Garrovick, the son of Kirk's former commanding officer. Once the creature has left the Enterprise they follow it across the galaxy. On the planet Tycho IV, Kirk and Garrovick set a trap for the creature.

Thoughts

Nurse Chapel was in this episode but Sulu was not. This is the eighth of 25 episodes in which she appeared.

The title of the episode describes how Spock and McCoy think Kirk is acting when he insists that they delay their next mission so that they can hunt down and destroy the smoke creature.

This isn't an awful episode but it also isn't a good one. I'm not sure if I have seen it before or not but it felt very generic and forgettable. I'm not a fan of episodes of this show or others where the antagonist is a nameless, malevolent force like the creature in this episode.

Notes

Stephen Brooks played the part of Ensign Garrovick. This is the only episode of this show in which he appeared. He appeared in one episode of The Invaders.

This is the first of two episodes on which writer Art Wallace worked. He also wrote an episode of The Invaders.

This is the third of seven episodes of this show that Ralph Senensky directed. The second episode he directed was 2.09 Metamorphosis.
