The Maquis, Part 1
A Cardassian ship, The Bok'Nor, blows up as it departs the space station. Chief O'Brien and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax investigate the cause of the explosion. Commander Calvin Hudson, friend of Commander Benjamin Sisko, visits Deep Space Nine. He and Sisko spend some time together reminiscing.
Quark is approached by Sakonna, a Vulcan woman who wants to talk business. Quark is smitten and intrigued. He agrees to a meeting. He later learns that she is looking for someone who can supply her with weapons. She offers to pay him quite handsomely.
Gul Dukat visits the space station and surprises Commander Sisko in his quarters. Dukat has something he wants to show Sisko, in the Volan colonies located in the demilitarized zone. Sisko checks out a runabout and together they depart. They witness, on the way to the Volan colonies, a battle between two shops with Cardassian registries and one two with Federation signatures. None of the ships respond to communication attempts from the runabout.
Sisko learns, once they arrive on Volan III, that the man who planted an explosive device on board the Bok'Nor has been captured by the Cardassians. The saboteur confessed to planting the explosives but he is now dead. The Cardassians say he killed himself. The Federation colonists, led my a human named Amaris, don't believe them.
Commander Hudson is present, at the meeting on Volan III, as the ranking Federation officer in the demilitarized zone. Gul Dukat was surprised that the saboteur was dead but not that he had been apprehended. Sisko and Dukat talk about it on the way back to Deep Space Nine.
Gul Dukat is kidnapped, soon after arriving back on Deep Space Nine, by a group that includes Sakonna and Amaros. The Maquis announces that they have kidnapped Gul Dukat. Sisko, Major Kira, and Doctor Bashir go after the kidnappers in a runabout. They follow the trail into a border region between Federation and of Cardassian space known as the Badlands. There they find the Maquis, led by Commander Hudson.
Thoughts
This is the first half of a two-part story. So far so good. I am not blown away by this story but I am intrigued. I notice that thing with the lighting and the way this episode was shot once again that I did a couple episodes back. I'm not sure what it is but it is distracting.
This is the third episode this season where Quark falls in love. I wonder if this will be the last time that will happen in this season or if there will be similar scenarios in future seasons.
Knowing that Gul Dukat will return in future episodes means that he is not in any great danger. Most of the other guest stars might be dead at the end of Part 2 but I'm really not sure what to expect.
Notes
Bernie Casey played the part of Commander Calvin Hudson. This is the first of two episodes of this show in which he appeared. I have seen him in a number of movies, the only one of which I have seen in recent year is I'm Gonna Get You Sucka (1988).
Mark Alaimo makes his sixth of 33 appearances as Gul Dukat in this episode. He was last seen in 2.08 Necessary Evil.
Bertila Damas played the part of Sakonna, the Vulcan that approaches Quark. This is the first of two episodes of this show in which she appeared. She also appeared in one episode of Voyager, playing a different character.
Richard Poe played the part of Gul Evek, one of the Cardassians that Sisko and Gul Dukat meet on Volan III. This is his second of three episodes of this show in which he appeared. The first was 2.17 Playing God. He also appeared in episodes of The Next Generation and Voyager. He played Gul Evek in all of his appearances in all three shows.
The teleplay for this episode was written by James Crocker. This is the fourth of five episodes of this show that he had a hand in writing. The first episode for which he wrote the teleplay was 2.05 Cardassians.
This episode was directed by David Livingston. This is the seventh of 17 episodes of this show that he directed. One of the previous episodes he directed was 2.07 Rules of Acquisition.
