Fork in the Road
Ballard is forced to spend some time in the hospital. The Pearlman case and the Ibarra case, in which Driscoll was the primary suspect, are taken away from the cold case unit and given to homicide. Ballard swipes Driscoll's phone and hands it off to Laffont.
Ballard is forced to stay at a motel and is assigned a security detail. She tries pushing back but it gets her nowhere. She starts to work on another cold case, Ray Lee. There was no body in the case of Ray Lee but thanks to someone who remembers something from years ago they locate the body in a canyon not far from a hiking trail.
Ballard visits a prisoner related to one of the victims whose belongings they found in the storage unit. She gets some more information from him and then refers his case to a defense attorney who promises to help him.
There is a gun with Ray Lee's body. They eventually trace the gun back to one of Ray's teachers but Ray's younger brother gets there first. It looks like he is about to kill the teacher but Ballard talks him into backing down.
Ballard has returned home by the end of the episode. She meets with Harry Bosch who is working on tracking down the phone numbers found in Driscoll's phone. Harry traces one of the numbers back to Olivas.
Thoughts
This was a good episode. It isn't perfect. When I look back on it now, it feels as though things worked out a little too neatly in the Lee case. I do appreciate the fact that it was a change of pace. I assume that something will get Ballard back on the Pearlman case or the storage unit case in the next episode.
